Our primary goal is to get you introduced to Tangier’s history and culture, while enjoying a personalized service of our highly qualified team. The tour begins with a visual orientation through the modern town and surrounding area including Cape Spartel and Hercules cave.
The second portion of the tour will lead you to the old town for an in-depth insight into the rich architectural heritage that dates back to various stages in Tangier’s history: Medieval, Portuguese, British..
We will start our exploration from the heights of the Kasbah (citadel), built on hill top for defensive purposes, and separated from the Medina by surrounding walls. The Kasbah is made up of historic and artistic monuments of Hispano-Moorish style, such as the Kasbah Mosque, and Dar el Makhzen (Governor’s House), decorated with mosaics, ornamental stucco and wood carvings. Currently, the building is hosting the Museum of Mediterranean Cultures.
For first time visitors, walking through the labyrinth of the Medina (old town), and souks (market), is truly a fascinating time for experiencing and learning about the local customs and traditions. The lifestyle in the old town has changed very little in centuries. As a matter of fact, public Hamams (steam baths), communal ovens, public fountains, old schools and markets, are still functioning according to ancient norms.
Since the XVII century, Tangier became the diplomatic capital of Morocco due to its proximity to Europe. Several embassies moved from Fes to Tangier. Given its geo-political importance, the government of the USA decided to open its first embassy ever in Tangier, in 1821. The American Legation has been designated as a National Historic Landmark for its special significance in the history of the USA.
As a result of its International Status (1923-1956), Tangier gained a reputation in the West as a haven for spies, businessmen, adventurers, bohemians and celebrities. It was this fact that attracted leading writers of the Beat Generation such as Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and the mythical group of the Rolling Stones.
It is worth mentioning that the first European artist who discovered Tangier was Eugène Delacroix in 1832. The prominent French painter Henri Matisse who visited Tangier in 1912, described the city as ‘ville lumière’ or ‘city of light’.
The tour offers the opportunity to experience some authentic Moroccan food, and the vibrant atmosphere of the souks where skillful artisans and craftsmen display their traditional hand made items always willing to start a conversation and negotiate the price!
